SOUL SHAKING AND FOOT TAPPING
WARM BEER COLD WOMEN
CELEBRATES THE MUSIC OF TOM WAITS

Preview performance January 31;Opening February 1;
Playing through February 17

(Minneapolis/St. Paul) The Guthrie is pleased to announce that Warm Beer Cold Women will return to the Twin Cities for a special engagement from January 31 through February 17 in the Dowling Studio. Producer/Director Robert O. Berdahl assembles some of the area’s finest actors, singers and musicians for an evening of orphaned stories and bruised music scribed by the prophet of the common man: Tom Waits. Tickets are priced from $18 to $34 and are now on sale through the Guthrie Box Office at 612.377.2224, toll-free 877.44.STAGE and online at www.guthrietheater.org.

Warm Beer Cold Women played to sold out crowds at the Bryant-Lake Bowl in 1999 and 2003, and again in 2005 and 2006 at the Music Box Theater. The theatrical retrospective of Waits’ characters, called “a testament to the timelessness of Waits’ street poetry and lust for life” by the Pioneer Press, lays out gritty truths like dirty laundry on the clothesline, with some rarely heard soliloquies laced in for his aficionados. For those unfamiliar with the bard of bum, the piece is a great introduction to some of Waits’ best known works.

“Waits is part Dylan Thomas, part junk-yard dog. His characters, who at first blush seem to come from the margins of society, speak intimately to everyone,” said Producer/Director Robert O. Berdahl. “I wanted to create this show because of his writing; not to imitate his voice – nobody can do that – I wanted to try and emulate his heart.”

Local actor/singers Katy Hays, Dennis Curley and Robert O. Berdahl are back as bums, lovers and bummed lovers, all bringing these Waitsian characters to life. The show’s six red-hot musicians are led by Dan Chouinard on piano, who displays his own chops in the solo number “The Tango.” The band also features the un-extinguishable Mark Stillman on accordion, Gary Rue on guitars and banjo, Chris Bates on upright bass, Chris Thompson on saxes and clarinet, and Matt Weaver on drums percussion and backyard dog.
